John A. Bird
Educators' Collaborative, Spruce Head, Maine

John Bird is a leadership and management consultant to non-profit organizations across the country. His clients have included over 250 independent schools and other organizations located in 45 states and four foreign nations or territories. John's services have included searches for heads of independent schools, strategic planning projects, board retreats on governance issues, consultations with schools considering mergers or other strategic alliances, conflict resolution, and planning studies for capital campaigns.

 

Before beginning his consulting career in 1989, John spent 29 years in independent education, five years in full-time teaching, five years as a senior administrator and teacher, and 19 years as a head of school. Ten of those 19 years were spent as headmaster of the Holland Hall School in Tulsa, Oklahoma (1974-84).

 

John has also served as a trustee and board chair of several non-profit boards in the fields of education, health care, the environment, the arts, and religion.

 

John grew up in Rockland, Maine, and received his B.A. degree from Bowdoin College. He also has an M.A. from George Washington University. John and his wife of 42 years, Mary Alice, now live in Spruce Head, Maine. The Birds have three grown children and several grandchildren.

 

Richard A. Coleman
Principal, Achievable Dream Academy, Newport News, Virginia

Richard Coleman has been an administrator at An Achievable Dream Academy for seven years and Principal of the school for four years. Prior to his experience at Achievable Dream, he taught 2nd grade at John Marshall Elementary for 2 ½ years in the Newport News School Division.

 

Mr. Coleman entered the education profession after working for IBM for 15 years and qualifying for an early retirement. Prior to IBM, he spent six years as a New York State Narcotics Correction Officer and 4 years in the United States Air force serving in Vietnam in 1968.

 

Mr. Coleman was born and raised in Staten Island, New York and holds a Bachelors Degree in Business and Accounting from New York City University. He received his Masters Degree in School Administration from George Washington University.

 

Mr. Coleman is married and has three grown children.

 

Mrs. DeAnn Davis
Principal, Sequoyah Elementary, Oklahoma City Public Schools

DeAnn Davis was born and raised in Oklahoma, and graduated from Maysville High School. She received a B.S. in Education from the University of Central Oklahoma, an M.A. from Oklahoma City University, and Administrative Certification through the Danforth Principal Preparation Program at the University of Oklahoma.Davis' career has spanned 34 years in four states: California, Colorado, Texas, and Oklahoma. She has enjoyed 16 years as an elementary and middle school teacher, seven years as a supervisor of gifted programs, and 11 years as a principal.

 

Davis has been honored with many wonderful experiences and accomplishments. Some of the most recent recognitions include:

Davis and her husband, Robert have been married 35 years and have three children and two grandchildren.

 

David G. Moore
Chairman and CEO, Corinthian College, Santa Ana, California

David G. Moore is one of the founders of Corinthian College and has served as our Chief Executive Officer as well as a member of our board of directors, since our inception in July 1995. He was selected Chairman of the Board in August of 2001. Immediately prior to forming our Company, he was President of National Education Center, Inc., a subsidiary of National Education Corporation. From 1992 to 1994, Mr. Moore served as President of DeVry Institute of Technology in Los Angeles, where he developed DeVry's West Coast growth strategy. From 1980 to 1992 he was employed by Mott Community College in Flint, Michigan, where he was President from 1984 to 1992. Mr. Moore served as Dean of Management from 1982 to 1984 and Dean of Management Information Systems from 1980 to 1982. From 1960 to 1980 Mr. Moore served a distinguished career in the U.S. Army, retiring at the rank of Colonel. Mr. Moore received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Seattle University and Master of Business Administration from the University of Puget Sound. He has also completed the Management of Higher Education Program at Harvard University, post graduate studies in Higher Education Management at the University of Michigan, and graduate study and research in Computer Science at Kansas State University.

 

Dr. Linda F. Nathan
Headmaster, Boston Arts Academy, Boston, Massachusetts

Linda Nathan, Headmaster, holds a Doctorate of Education from Harvard University, a Master's in Education Administration from Antioch University, and a Master's of Performing Arts from Emerson College. She was instrumental in starting Boston's first performing arts middle school; a driving force behind the creation of the city's first middle college high school (Fenway High School); and a co-founder and senior associate of the Center for Collaborative Education-Metro Boston, an education reform organization. From 1995 to 1998, Dr. Nathan served on the National Academy of Science's Commission of the Science of Learning, and was honored in 1990 by Chronicle (Channel 5) as a Massachusetts Teacher of Year. She is currently a guest lecturer at Harvard Graduate School of Education's Arts in Education program and is teaching a course in Building Democratic Schools.

 

Dr. David E. Sawyer
Superintendent of Tulsa Public Schools, Tulsa, Oklahoma

Dr. Sawyer was most recently the Superintendent of Schools in Brevard County, Florida, and served in that capacity from 1994 until his August 2000 arrival at Tulsa Public Schools.

 

From 1991-93 he was the Superintendent of the Clovis Unified School District in Clovis, California, and from 1988-91 he was the Superintendent of the Pickens County Public Schools in Easley, South Carolina.

 

Dr. Sawyer also served as an Assistant Superintendent in the Fairfax County Public Schools in Fairfax, Virginia, holding that post from 1980-88. He was a teacher and department head for the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa from 1976-80.

 

He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1967, his Master's degree in 1970 from Old Dominion University and his Ed.D. from Texas A & M University in 1972.

 

Dr. Sawyer and his wife, Joyce, have two grown sons and five grandchildren. He enjoys sailing, woodworking, collecting ceramic mice and learning the five-string banjo in his spare time.

 

Mary Catherine Swanson
AVID Founder and Executive Director, San Diego, California

Mary Catherine taught high school English for 20 years before she developed AVID, a secondary school program which prepares disadvantaged students for four-year college entry. Today more than 85,000 secondary students in 21 states and 15 countries are enrolled in AVID, and more than 95% of these students enroll in college.

 

Mary Catherine is a recipient of the 2001 Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Prize in Education for her commitment to closing the achievement gap. Swanson was also recently named “America's Best Teacher” by Time Magazine and CNN, “for turning thousands of average students into college scholars.” Among other awards and recognition she has received are the A+ Award for Reaching the Goals of America 2000 from the U.S. Department of Education, EXCEL Award for Excellence in Teaching, and Salute to Excellence from the American Association for Higher Education.

 

She is listed in Who's Who in America and was the commencement speaker at San Diego State University in 1992, and at the University of San Diego in 2002. She is the only public school teacher ever to have won the $50,000 award for Pioneering Achievement in Education from the Charles A. Dana Foundation in New York. In presenting that award the Foundation cited her for “heeding the teacher's calling at the highest level of professional dedication in developing AVID, an imaginative restructuring of the school day that has given thousands of students the skills, support, and guidance that they need to fulfill their potential-far too tragically overlooked-to prepare for a college education.” Mary Catherine created the AVID Center in 1992. AVID was featured on 60 Minutes II in 2002.

 

The San Diego-based Swanson has long been recognized as a champion for students. A much-admired educator and innovator, Swanson has served as an inspiration and advisor to educational leaders across the nation.

 

She has been married for 36 years and is the mother of Tom Swanson, a graduate of Stanford University who teaches high school in Northern California and has begun AVID at his school. Tom's decision to enter teaching is one of Mary Catherine's proudest moments.

 

Gary A. Woods
Chief, Continuing Education Programs, Department of Defense (DoD), The Pentagon, Washington D.C.

Mr. Woods received his BA in European History from Wichita State University and MAs in Medieval European History and Education from Wichita State and Chapman University respectively. He was awarded an honorary doctorate in higher education administration by Park University. He is a graduate of Harvard's Institute for Management and Leadership in Education, the Federal Executive Institute, DoD's Senior Executive Leadership Program, and Air War College. He has completed additional graduate work in law and public policy, management economics, management information systems, national security policy, and systems acquisition management.

 

Mr. Woods has over 30 years of experience in the field of education, to include positions at installations and military headquarters around the world. He is currently responsible for oversight and administration of all adult, continuing, post-secondary, higher and non-traditional education programs for DoD that serve over 1.4 million personnel worldwide. This includes fiscal and regulatory guidance for military education centers, academic testing programs, military tuition assistance, distance education, the Troops-to-Teachers program, overseas DoD education contracts, quality oversight for each of these programs, as well as official liaison with leaders of higher academe and professional education associations, state advisory boards on military education, US Departments of Education and Veterans Affairs, and other state and federal departments and agencies. His office is also responsible for monitoring legislative activities and addressing inquiries on military education and tuition assistance, and for media interviews and congressional testimony on behalf of DoD. He chairs the DoD Interservice Voluntary Education Working Group and the Governing Board for the Military Installation Voluntary Education Review. He serves as Executive Chair and emcee for the triennial DoD World Wide Education Symposium. He has also held positions as a guidance counselor; command counselor; education services officer; Chief of Professional Development; Associate Director of Community Support; and as Director of Education, Training and Career Development. He has set on or chaired several government training and outsourcing panels and has held senior leadership positions in numerous national educational organizations. He has taught US and European history at the graduate and undergraduate levels and has written extensively on education and distance learning. Mr. Woods has received numerous awards for efforts and activities both in and out of government.
